Overview
A nonprofit created by the Commonwealth in 2013 and funded by the General Assembly alongside five public universities, UVA among them. Virginia Catalyst will not fund a university alone — every award requires a research university and an industry partner on the same project, which is what makes it a translation instrument rather than a research grant.
- 75 grants totaling $40M since December 2013
- Awards of $200,000 to $800,000 per project
- Drew nearly $60M in matching funds and $700M+ in follow-on
- Requires a university–industry partnership on every award
- Member institutions: UVA, VCU, Virginia Tech, George Mason and Old Dominion
