School of Nursing
Nurse scientists turning what they see at the bedside into health technology.
$15.6Min research grants, FY2020–25
$3.4MNIH grant for in-home cancer pain sensing
#1BSN program in Virginia
Overview
Nurses see the problems of care first, and UVA’s nurse scientists are building the tools to solve them. Healthcare Technology is one of the School of Nursing’s three research areas of excellence: faculty are developing AI that flags patients at risk before they decline, wearables and in-home sensors for cancer pain, and decision tools that help patients weigh their treatment options. One of those tools, the CoMET predictive-monitoring software, is now a commercial product.
- CoMET predictive monitoring — co-developed by nursing professor Jessica Keim-Malpass with UVA cardiology, now sold by Nihon Kohden
- $3.4M NIH grant for wearables and in-home sensors that help patients and caregivers anticipate cancer pain
- Smartwatch prototype to improve bedside care and clinician–patient communication
- Nursing faculty on a $25M NIH Bridge2AI team building AI from data that represents diverse populations
- Mary Morton Parsons Clinical Simulation Learning Center — nearly 10,000 sq ft, INACSL-endorsed
- Partners for taking ideas further: Enterprise Studio, the Coulter Center and iTHRIV
